FAQ

I teach a lot of adults as well as children and often need to change lessons around. I appreciate students have to sometimes work irregular hours and may also have family commitments that need to be prioritised.

Can I be flexible when booking lessons?

If you are not certain  you will continue you might not want to pay the £130 it usually costs to buy a beginner violin. In this case I have a spare violin students can play for the first lesson. If you would like to continue we can go to a violin shop and I can help you pick out an instrument you will be happy with.

Do I need my own violin?

In the first lesson we go through the basics to get you started. You will learn the correct way to hold the violin and the bow, and then how to make a nice long note resound on the open strings. Then we start using the 1st, 2nd and 3rd fingers of the left hand. Usually this will be enough for a first lesson, but sometimes if there is time we can also learn our first piece: Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.

What is covered in the first lesson?
How much do the lessons cost?

I charge £25 p/hr or £15 for a half hour session.

I get asked this question a lot and it is still difficult to answer! The truth is that it all depends on the individual. There are a few indicators, however: it really helps if you have played an instrument in the past, especially guitar, and it's also easy to pick up again if you played violin at school. At the end of the day a love of music is usually the best sign you'll be able to sound nice before too long.

How long does it take to sound good?

Yes, I live in BS5 and am happy to drive to students homes who are up to 3/4 of an hour away.
